DESIGN AND PRODUCTION OF HAND MADE RUG USING A GIRAFFE AS A MOTIF

DESIGN AND PRODUCTION OF HAND MADE RUG USING A GIRAFFE AS A MOTIF

CHAPTER ONE
1.0     INTRODUCTION
1.1     BACKGROUND OF THE STUDIES
A rug is a textile floor covering typically consisting of an upper layer of pile (with a tidy collection of several colours of wool (yarns) of the same kind place on top of each other) attached to a backing. The pile was traditionally made from wool, but since the 20th century, synthetic fibers such as polypropylene, nylon or polyester are often used, a these fibers are less expensive than wool.  The pile usually consists of twisted tufts ( A branch of hair, feathers, grass etc growing or held closely together at their base) which are typically heat – treated to maintain their structure. The term “Rug” is often used interchangeably with the term “carpet” although the term “rug” can be applied to a floor covering that covers an entire house where as a ‘carpet’ is generally bigger than a single room, and traditionally does not even span from one wall to another, and is typically does not even span from one wall to another, and is typically not even attached as part of the floor.

Rugs are used for a variety of purposes, including insulating a person’s feet from a cold tile or concrete floor, making a room comfortable as a place to sit on the floor (e.g when playing with children or as a prayer rug, reducing sound from walking (particularly in apartment buildings( and adding decoration or colour to a room. Rugs can be made in any colour by using different dyed fibers. Rugs are used in industrial and commercial establishment such as retail stores and hotels and in private homes. In the 2010, a huge range of rugs and carpets are available at many prices and quality levels, ranging from inexpensive, synthetic rug s that are mass produced in factories and used in commercial building to costly hand – knotted wool rugs which are used in private homes of wealthy families.

Rugs can be produces on a loom quite similar to woven fabric, made using needle felts, knotted by hand hooking wood or cotton *in Oriental rugs( made with their pile injected into a backing material (caved tufting, flat woven, made by hooking wool or cotton through the meshes of a study or embroided (meaning to make pattern of a stitches on cloth with coloured cotton or silk threads).
Rug is commonly made in width of 12 feets (3.7m) and 15 feets (4.6m) in the USA, 4m and 5m in Europe. Since, the 20th century, where necessary for wall – wall seeming iron and seam tape (formally it was sewn together) and fixed to a floor over a cushioned underlay (pad) using nail, tack strips (known in the UK as griper rods) adhesive or occasionally decorative metal stair rods. Wall to wall rug is distinguished from carpet or mats which are loose laid floor covering as wall to wall rug is fixed to the floor and covers a much larger area.

Child labour has often been used in ASIA for hand knotting rugs. The good weave labeling scheme used through out Europe and North America assues that child labour has been used. Importer pay for labels, and the revenue collected is used to monitor centers of production and endure previously exploited.

Many centuries ago, shepherd began knotting wool into heavy woven cloth. These heavy cloth provided protection from the element and eventually were developed into rug. Whether the first rugs were made in the near east or saberia is not clear, but over the centuries, rugmaking changed from a necessity to a fine art form the pattern, vibrant colours and many knots per square inch produced beautiful rugs.

According to “Longman Dictionary” it described “Rug” as a piece of thick cloth or wool that is smaller than a carpet and is put on the floor as decoration – compare mat. Also it is a large pieces of material that you can wrap around yourself, expecially when you are travelling.

A rug is a textile floor covering typically consisting of an upper layer of pile attached to a backing. The pile was traditionally made from wool but since the 20th century, synthetic fibers such as polypropylene, nylon or polyester are less expensive than wool. The pile usually consist of twisited tuffs which are typically heat – treated to maintain their structure.

The term carpet is often used interchangeably with the term ‘rug’ although the term carpet can be applied to a floor covering that covers an entire house whereas a carpet is generally not even span from one room, and traditionally does not even span from one as part of the floor.

Rugs are used for a variety of purpose, including insulating a person’s feet from a cold tile or concrete floor, making a room more comfortable as a sit on the floor (e.g when playing with children or as a prayer rug) reducing sound from walking ( particularly in apartment buildings) and adding decoration or colour to a room. Rug can be made in any colour by using differently dyed fibers. Rug can have many different types of pattern and motifs used to decorate the surface. In the Pooos, rugs are used in industries and commercial establishments such as retail stores huge range of rug and carpet are available at many price and quality levels ranging from in expensive, synthetic rug that are mass produced in factors and used in commercial building to costly hand – knotted wool rugs which are used in private homes of wealth families.

Rug can be produced on a loom quite similar to woven fabric, made using needle felts, knotted by hand in oriental rugs made with their pile injected into a backing material (called tufting), flat woven, made by hooking wool or cotton through the meshes of a study fabric or embroidered.

Chrid labor has often been used in Asia for hand knotting rugs. The Good weave labeling scheme used child labours has not been used. Importers pay for the labels, and the revenue collected is used to monitor centers of production and educate previously exploited children
The processes and the materials that go into the construction of a quality rug have been largely unchanged for a very long time. While various culture across the globe have each developed important rug making traditions, from cultures as for afield as the Turkish and the Chinese, there is in fact very little variety in how rugs are actually put together.

Similarly, there is very little variety in the type of materials that are utilized in the construction of a rug of or carpet. It is important to note that the materials that go into a rug are certainly as important as the designed and workmanship that go into it oven with the strategy planning on tatani meaning all talk and no  action and “even if a room has booo tatmi, a person only needs one to sleep on”, meaning don’t take more than you need.

According to Ali B (2003) a rug is a textile floor covering consisting of an upper layer of pile attached to a backing. The pile is generally either made from wool or fibers such as polypropylene, nylon or polyester and usually consist of twisted tuffs which are often heat – treated to maintain their structure.

The term “rug” often used for interchangeably with the term “carpet” although the term “carpet” can be applicable to a floor covering that covering that covers an entire house. Carpet are use in industrial and commercial establishment and a private homes. Rugs are used for a variety of purpose, including insulating a person’s feet from tile or concrete floor. Carpet means to be summond for a serious reasons, typically from airplanes which developed in the 20th century in which an  entire city is bombed s(rather than precise strikes on military target).

A rug bag or carpet bag is a suitcase made from a piece of carpet. The terms gained a popular usage after the American civil war to refers to carpet baggers allegedly politically manipulated and controlled former confederate state for financial and power gains. In derisively to refer to a politician who runs for public office in an area where he or she does not have deep community ties, or has lived only for a short time. In the United Kingdom, the term was adopted to refers informally to the who join a mutual organization such as a building society, in order to force it to demutualize, that is convert into a joint stock company, solely for personal financial gain.
Most talented weavers would have a difficult time putting together a quality pieces if they had only sub – materials to work with.

When everything is said and done, the materials used to make rugs contributes a enormously to the overall impression of the rugs. Its colour, textile feel and above all its durability.
There are many materials used in the manufacturing of rugs from natural fibers such as wool, sisal  and hemp to man – mack polypropylene and polyester shag piles. Each material has its pros and cons and unique attributes.

Many centuries ago, shepherds began knotting wool into heavy woven cloth. These heavy cloth provided protection from the element and eventually were developed into rugs. Whether the first rugs were made in the near east or Siberia is not clear, but over the centuries rug making changed from a necessity to a time art form.

The patterns, vibrant colors, are many knots per square inch produced beautiful rugs these early artisans showed amazing skill and ingenuity in designing, dyings and producing these prized rugs. When a personal prayer rug became a tradition at Islamic; the spread of this religion to Spain and Eastern Europe took the necessity of rug making with it.
Hand knotted rugs have come to be associated with luxury in contemporary interiors and they often serve as a focal point in formal residential living areas. Corperate board rooms or luxury hotel lobbies.

Woven rug feature extreme dense pile consisting of wool or silk knotted on closely woven backing.
This method allows for extreme versatility in design and texture. Traditionally; rug designs designated tribal or village source, and often the town weaver. The name of the rug indicates the weaving center, city or area of origin.

The commercial rug industry has its beginning in England.s this commercialization soon made names of English towns like AX minister and wilton synonymous with carpet. AX minister rugs, arguably one of the best known rugs, are characterized by heavy backing made from jute, cotton or man made fibers that form length wise ribs throughout the world, many hotel chains, theaters and casines use AX minister rug.

Tufted rug is made in (3) three layers. The top layer is called the face fiber. These fibers are made from nylon, wool, olefin, polyester, acrylic or cotton. The face fiber is stitched by high – speed machine to the primary backing.

1.2     Aim and Objective of the study
The following are the aims and objectives of the study
  1. To beautify room and decoration purposes
  2. To make the room comfortable for the users
  3. To protect the floor from damage
  4. To reduce heat and sound generated from the floor
1.3     Significance Of The Study
The production or designing of rug is very important for both men and women in the whole wood. It brings about self employment to we youth of this day especially the graduate instead of working from self with production of this rug. Even foot mat etc. to avoid wasting of time
