RECYCLING OF WASTE ALUMINIUM ROOFING SHEET IN BUILDING CONSTRUCTION FOR RE-USE

CHAPTER ONE

  1. INTRODUCTION

Recycling of used materials in building construction is very essential in a way of minimizing wastage of materials from construction site. It is carefully observed that among used materials, some of them can still be recycled such of which are plastics, aluminium from roofing sheets, windows and doors, reinforcement steel, Angle irons, timber and plywood, metals and mansory materials.

These recycled materials can still be used in the same areas where fresh manufactured products are used. In order to save wastage of materials and cost, recycling of used material is paramount. These used materials are still sources of raw materials to manufacturing industries; as such it is not just essential to the construction site alone but also to the manufacturing industry.

Aluminium along span roofing sheet is a production of aluminium metal and one of the most modern metals. It has only been produced on an industrial scale since 1886, when Hall and Heroult independently discovered how to produce aluminium through electrolysis.

In 1900, the annual output of Aluminium was only 1000 tons. By the end of the twentieth century, the annual production had reached 32 million tons. This makes aluminium the world’s second most used metal, today the world cannot do without aluminium.

The building industry is one of the industries benefited immensely from aluminium. Aluminium facilitates the construction of corrosion resistant light weight and low cost of maintaining buildings around the world. It facilitates long lasting aesthetic and hygienic environment because of corrosion resistant, clean rainwater, which can be collected from aluminium roof and use without health problem.

Similarly, the easy recycling of used aluminium metal roofing sheet gives it second – hand value with environmental friendliness as it can be recycled again and again by present and future generations using about 5% of the energy refined for primary production.

1.1   AIM

This project is aimed at recycling of used aluminium roofing sheet in Building Construction for re-used.

  1. OBJECTIVES
  2. To identify an insight into the recycling of used Aluminium roofing sheet.
  3. To identify the simplest ways of sorting out the Aluminium sheets to be recycled.
  4. To identify benefits of recycling Aluminium roofing sheet in the construction industry.

1.3   NEED FOR THE STUDY

This project is aimed at recycling of used aluminium roofing sheet in building construction as a source of information to anyone who is seeking knowledge or information on how Aluminium sheet can be sorted and recycled.

1.4   STATEMENT OF RESEARCH PROBLEM

In the past years, in the face of man’s activities he is faced with the needs for management, “management is management everywhere you go” (Mr. Chuks GNS Dept. FPN 2013).

However, construction firms in Nigeria in order to perfectly manage their products needs not to be asked for the second time of the uses and importance of recycling of Aluminium roofing sheet for re-use which will however improve productivity, quality, save time and waste of Aluminium sheet. Why should some construction firms not use recycled aluminium corrugated roofing sheet?

Moreover, with the increasing improvement in technology in the world now, every construction firm should have equipment that can be able to recycle some building materials especially corrugated aluminium roofing sheet in order to save cost and wastage of materials.

  1. SCOPE AND LIMITATION

1.5.1        Scope

The scope of this study tends to cover the level of recycling corrugated aluminium roofing sheet in building construction industry. The study was limited to public buildings in Abuja.

  1. Limitation

This research work was limited to some natural phenomenon and the distributed questionnaire in terms of it’s retrieval from the respondents. This project was a critical attempt to identify those factors that are affecting the usage of recycled corrugated aluminium roofing sheet in the Nigerian building construction firm.
