TOPOGRAPHIC SURVEY OF SURVEY STAFF QUARTERS OF THE FEDERAL POLYTECHNIC NASARAWA

TOPOGRAPHIC SURVEY OF SURVEY STAFF QUARTERS OF THE FEDERAL POLYTECHNIC NASARAWA

(A Case Study of Senior Staff Quarters of Federal Polytechnic Nasarawa)

ABSTRACT

This project plain the experience of the researcher in surveying the course of study in the institution. It also show the aimed at making use of survey equipment, computer, hardware and software in the in the production of topographic and detail map. The project comprises of 15 stations in which the traverse was run. It started from a tertiary control pillar proved to be in position (in situ check) it was divided into five chapters. The first chapter talks of introduction in which the purpose of the project is defined indicating the type of introduction in which the purpose of the project is defined indicating the type of traverse. The second chapter treats the reconnaissance which is the most important aspect of the project preliminary operation which determines the success of work we embarked upon. The third chapter deals with field operation collection of instrument adjustment of instrument method of angular and linear measurement. Chapter four shows all the calculation done in respect to the work and for it accuracy to be determined (office work) it includes the computational procedure adjustment of field data lastly, chapter five talks about the conclusion, problems encounter, recommendation appendix and list of symbol.

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

  1.     INTRODUCTION

Surveying is the art of science and technology of making measurement of the relative position of natural and man-made feature on the surface of the earth and the presentation of this information either graphically (as map and plans) or numerically (as locational values such as coordinates and bearings) with the aid of a suitable scale” (Surv. Olumide)

A Topographic Map is defined as the representation of physical topographic features (both nature and man-made) in relative position on paper. It can also be defined as the combination of general and thematic map and uses a scale to show the correct relationship of various features to each other.

The Topographic map mentioned above involves the following processes

  1. Traversing (theodolite traversing)
  2. Leveling (spirit level)
  3. Tachometry method.

1. 1    BACK GROUND OF THE STUDY AREA

The Federal Polytechnic Staff Quarter Nasarawa was  establish in 1998, to meet the education need of the children of Federal Polytechnic Staff and also improve the standard of the student in Nasarawa who are within the Polytechnic.

  1. AIM AND OBJECTIVES

The aims and objectives of this project work includes:

  1. Collection of relevant for the production of topographical survey data for the production of the topographical survey of the project site.
  2. The representation of both natural and artificial features within the project site using appropriate symbols.
  3. Location of the correct positions of the features within the project site
  4. Showing the topographical nature of the site
  5. The productions of a topographical map of the project site showing the relative position of all features, both natural and artificial.
  1. STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

The Federal Polytechnic Staff Quarters does not have a map upon which development plan can be made for feature development.

  1. PURPOSE OF THE STUDY

The purpose of the study is to produce a topographic map showing the features both nature and man-made such as road, footpath, building in their real and proper provision on the ground. It also provides an avenue for student to acquire knowledge in the practical aspect (that is been able to handle the equipment).

  1. SIGNIFICANCE OF STUDY

The significance of study is to produce a topographic map of the school to serve as a base map upon which feature development can be made.

  1. RESEARCH QUESTION AND HYPOTHESIS

This question deals with what to do in order to archive the aim of the study. It is also important to note that surveying is a practical course. In achieving the aims and objective of the research work, question like’,

  1. What method should be use in achieving the set of goal?
  2. The equipment needed depends on the method to be use.
  3. Arc the equipment available within the school thus, in order to achieve this fate, the following survey method are to be use.
  4. Theodolite traversing
  5. Spirit leveling
  6. Tacheometric/option method for detailing
  1. ASSUMPTION

The method used is assumed to be okay in solving the problem: it is also assumed that the method used is sufficient and adequate is acquiring a desire result and also the instrument use are good enough to provide enough data required for the project.

  1. SCOPE OF THE STUDY

The scope of this project title ‘’topographical survey’’ of Polytechnic Staff School Nasarawa include.

  1. Reconnaissance
    1. Control extension
    1. Theodolite traversing
    1. Spirit leveling
    1. Tacheometry method
    1. Computation
    1. Plotting using suitable scale
  1. DEFINITION OF TERM
  2. Traversing: is the method of determining the relative location of point or is a series of connected line whose length and direction are determine from field observe
  3. Spirit leveling: is the process of measuring the different in height between two points on the surface of the earth in relation to a given datum.
  4. Tachometry: is a method of process of obtaining horizontal and vertical observation of details by means of direct optical method.
