CHEMICAL ANALYSIS OF CRUDE PALM OIL AND COMMERCIAL PALM OIL

ABSTRACT

This study was carried out to investigate the comparative characteristics properties of crude palm oil and commercial palm oil. The comparative characteristics properties of crude palm oil and commercial palm oil shows the various value for them such as, specific gravity for crude palm oil was 0.950g and commercial palm oil specific gravity was 0.918g. Moisture content for crude palm oil was1.729% and commercial palm oilwas1.729%. Saponification value for crude palm oil was 617.1mg and commercial palm oil saponification value was 617.15mg.Free fatty acid for crude palm oil was 1.882% .and commercial palm oil free fatty acid was 1.143%. Iodine value for crude palm was 10.62mg and commercial palm oil Iodine valuewas 7.77mg. Peroxide value for crudepalm oilwas 3.77mg and commercial palm oil Peroxide value was 4.09mg. Colour for crude palm oil was yellow-red and commercial palm oil colour was yellow-red.Viscosity for crude palm oil was165.7 centistokes and commercial palm oilwas165.7 centistokes.

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 BACKGROUND OF STUDY

Palm tree (Elaeisguineensis) is one plant which grows best in tropical regions.  Palm oil fruit is a drupe consisting of a hard seed surrounded by a soft semi fibrous and semi fleshy pulp (IPPA, 2010). In the center of this stone or nut lies the seed (Aghalino, 2000).  The fleshy part of the fruit (the pulp) is at first black in color, but as it ripens becomes bright red (Igweet al, 2007). Palm fruit common name for member is palm, a large fairly of chiefly tropic all trees shams and vines, most spies are traces characterized by a crown of compound teases called fronds terminal tall woody, unbranched stem (Akangbeet al, 2011). Also oil palm being a nature of equatorial west Africa and preferring high rainfall and a more open kind, a long river banks grow in bunches weighing up to ten kilograms and containing hundreds of fruitless like small plums (Aletoret al, 1990). The flesh is oily and the oil ran can be recovered by very simple means so that it is probable that palm oil has been recovered and used for human food for tens of thousands of years (Dimeluet al, 2011). The primitive extraction procedure is still in use in the village today (Houriaet al 2002).  A typical method consists of cutting the bunches, usually after climbing the tree and allowing them to ferment in a heap for six to seven days then production takes place (Alamuet al, 2007). Vegetable as it is generally called is an important product and raw material for most agro allied industries (Hyman et al,1990). More emphasis had been placed on vegetable oil from groundnut source in recent time, this had been attainted to its local usages most especially in domestic activities like cooking and as well as its cheap and local method of production but with the new trend in technology, vegetable oil is now being produced from both palm oil and palm kernel fruit (Houriaet al 2002).

1.3 AIM/OBJECTIVES

AIM

The aim of this study is to investigate the analytical test on crude palm oil and commercial palm oil and Comparing them.

OBJECTIVES

  • The objectives of this work are as follows:
  • To determine the properties of crude palm oil.
  • To determine the properties of commercial palm oil
  • To compare the properties of crude palm oil and those of commercial palm oil
