Social media can be defined as a computer – mediated tools that allow
people to create, share or exchange information, ideas and videos in virtual
communities.

the technology foundations of web that allow the creation and exchange of user
generated content.
Types of Social Media
Media sharing: These are services that allow you to upload and share
various media such as music, video, pictures. Most services have additional
features such as commenting, profile etc. Here the most popular media are
Youtube and flickr.
Micro-blogging: These are services that focus on short updates that are pushed out to
anyone subscribed to receive the updates. E.g. Twitter.
Social – News: The voting is the core social aspect of the items that give the most
votes are displayed the most prominently. Most services allow people to post
various news outside articles and then allows its users to “vote” on the news
or items e.g. Reddit and Digg.
