THE FALLING STANDARD OF EDUCATION IN NIGERIA
Education
is the act or process of imparting or acquiring general knowledge, developing
the powers of reasoning and judgment, and generally of preparing oneself or
others intellectually for mature life. The falling standard of education in Nigeria could
be linked to the lost glories of traditional education which inculcates among
other things the very important values of hard-work, diligence, integrity and
high production. When these are lacking in any education system, the results
are often devastating leading to poor quality output (graduates). The factors
that result to the falling standard of education in Nigeria are numerous, but in
respect to this article, I will limit my writing to three major ones.
The
employment of unqualified teachers in our education system has greatly affected
the standard of education in Nigeria.
This is because employment is no longer based on merit but rather on
godfatherism thereby leading to employment of unqualified teachers. Teachers
who are the foundadtion promoting education at all levels of the nation’s
educational system are shirking their responsibilities towards providing and
maintaining good standard of education.
Furthermore,
poor attitude of government towards proper funding of education is one of the
major reasons for the decay in the educational sector. Lack of adequate funds
to equip our institutional laboratories, libraries, and adequate funds for the
lecturers – has resulted to frequent strike which has also contributed
immensely to the falling standard of education in our dear country.
Moreso,
parents in general are one of the factor that have increased the poor standard
of education in the country due to their lack of interest towards the
upbringing of their children. Most parent prefer their business to their
children’s education, they never care to go through their children’s note book
when they return back from school and even visiting their children school in
order to know their grasping ability is a problem. Most parents don’t buy text
books for their children, they don’t encourage their children to read their
books after school hour rather, they encourage them through buying of home
video for them to watch from morning to night and such, it has makes students /
children not to perform to standard.
Most
student are no more serious with their
education, rather spent most of their time on social network chatting and
playing games, moving from one bear parlor
to the other, most of the student feel reluctant to attend lectures and
at the end they either sleep with lectures or bribing them in other to pass
that course without having the real knowledge they are suppose to have so
leading to poor output (graduate).
Finally,
the way out of this fast growing menace in our country is that, employment of
teachers / lecturers should be base on merit and not godfatherism. Government
should also put more effort to sanitize our higher institutions in terms of
producing funds for infrastructural facilities, like good buildings, among
others. Our parents should also be properly oriented in terms of their child up
bringing and others.
Education is the foundation to brighter future
if we must have peace and progress in
our country.
