AS – BUILT SURVEY OF PART OF FEDERAL POLYTECHNIC NASARAWA
(ADMINISTRATIVE BLOCK, ICT AND ETF BLOCKS)
ABSTRACT
This project gives a sufficiently detail on the experience the student had during the course of study in surveying in the institution. It explains about the stage and the practical aspect carried out during the work the project comprises of 9 station on which the traverse was run. It started from a tertiary control pillars proved to be in position (check in situ) the traverse gives the total of linear misclosure of 1:14000 angular misclosure of 1`.30“ which agreed with the traverse specification for the third order ( tertiary) and hence the project was carried out in accordance with the survey specification for third order traversing. Finally, plan was drawn using the automated processes.
CHAPTER ONE
1.0 INTRODUCTION
Surveying is the science and art of determining the relative position of point above on or beneath the surface of the earth or establishing such point. In a more general sense however survey can be regarded as the discipline which encompasses all methods of gathering and processing information about the physical earth and environment source.
In surveying there is an essential need for map production for future planning development, for modification and proper assessment of the existing development in a particular area where As- built surveying is vital.
Map, according to the American congress on surveying and mapping (1972) is a representation on a plain surface on an established scale of the physical features (natural and man-made) of a part of the whole of the earth surface by the use of sign and symbols and with the method of orientation.
As – built map is a kind of map whose primary purpose is to show and identify the original shape and size of the building both natural and suitable man made feature of the earth surface using a scale.
The purpose of the As –built survey also commonly called a physical survey is to show the property “AS IT IS BUILT” as a particular point in time. While a pre – construction survey is performed to document coordinates prior to construction work being performed. The As – built survey is conducted to show the current state of the site at various state throughout the duration of the project. It also serve as a close document to verify that the work authorized was completed to plan and in compliance with all relevant standards and regulations.
The project As – built survey is made for gathering data about natural and man – made feature of part of Federal Polytechnic Nasarawa that is the administrative block, ICT block and EFT blocks and other details within its environments was obtained pertaining to elevation as well as to the location of constructed and natural features such as buildings, trees, poles and the entire information is plotted in map format called AS-BUILT.
The As – built map of part of federal polytechnic Nasarawa i.e. administrative block, ICT block and ETF blocks involve the following procedure.
- Reconnaissance
- Traversing
- Linear measurement
- Detailing
1.1 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY AREA
The Federal Polytechnic Nasarawa was established in 1983 and this project work covers the administrative block, ICT block, auditorium. ETF blocks and all the necessary poles and tree close to it to the school library.
Administrative block is the part of the school where documentation of the detail is been compiled i.e. keeping of student data.
School library is the part of the school where student get more knowledge and make research.
1.2 AIM
To Produce a base map of Administrative block ICT block and ETF blocks
1.2.1 OBJECTIVES
- Production of As – built survey map at the end of the field work.
- Manmade and natural feature are to be represented using appropriate symbols.
- Exact / correct position of all the features within the site are to be located.
- Data that are of important use are to be collected for the production of As – built.
1.3 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
The Federal Polytechnic Nasarawa administrative was created to achieve an aim of training people to acquire technical and vocational skill, As time ticks by the need for infrastructural development has to be part of their aim but as it is well known, there can be no meaningful development without a base map, from all possible research it was discovered that the administrative block of Federal Polytechnic Nasarawa has undergone some structural modification which has not been represented in any map format, hence the need to carryout the task of solving this problem for proper documentation.
1.4 PURPOSE OF THE STUDY
There is an evidence that no man embark on any job without having in mind what he or she desire to achieve at the end, so it also applicable to this project work.
The purpose of the study is apparently seen in the aims and objectives of this project as embedded in the fact that after the whole field work an As – built map. Showing the relative position of point both natural and man – made feature of the school must emerge.
Nevertheless, it also gives an avenue for one to handle instrument and also be able to handle job yourself.
1.5 SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
This project work is relevant because of the end product which is producing As – built map of part of the school. This will serve as a base map upon which feature development can be planned, so to say this map will provide a base for the master plan of the school.
1.6 SCOPE OF THE STUDY
The scope of this project work includes.
- Reconnaissance
- Control extension
- Theodolite traversing
- Detailing
- Linear measurement
- Computation
- Plotting using suitable scale
1.7 DEFINATION OF TERMS
RECONNAISSANCE:- is a type of field survey that is often used to gather initial information regarding the presence or absence of historical properties within the project area.
LINEAR MEASUREMENT:- is the measurement of distance between points on the surface of the earth.
TRAVERSE:- consist of series of lines, whose length and direction are measured connecting point whose position are to be determined.
RANGING ROD:- Is a survey instrument used for making the position of station and sighting of those station as well as for ranging the straight line.
STATION:- Is a point whose elevation is to be determined example: face left and face right .
FACE LEFT:- This is when the vertical circle is on the left telescope at the time of observation.
FACE RIGHT:- This is when the vertical circle is on the right telescope at the time of observation.
PLAIN BUBBLE:- This is used for setting the horizontal axis of the instrument in the horizontal plain.
CIRCULAR BUBBLE:- This is used for setting the vertical axis of the instrument over a survey station.
CLAMPING SCREW:- Used for clamping the instrument in either vertical or horizontal plain.
CIRCLE READING:- They are graduated in degree, minutes and seconds (0, ’, ”) which are used for angular reading.
SCALE:- Is the value which indicate the ratio of the horizontal and vertical plan distance to the equivalent horizontal and vertical distance that was used to produce the drawing.
