DIFFERENT BETWEEN REFERENCE AND BIBLIOGRAPHY

Definition

Bibliography:  is the list of all document materials or sources from which the writer got his or her research information. This is usually source of literature but sometimes also includes data and other types of information.

Reference: this is a list or catalogue of materials or source from which certain specific information has been extracted. When used in this restricted sense, which is mostly within the body of the write up (as appearing at the end of chapters), the list contain only materials, which have been cited.

 THE DIFFERENCES ARE AS FOLLOWS:

References:

1. It consists of a list of material from which specific information has been extracted and cited in the write up. While bibliography is the list of all material consulted during the research work not withstanding whether specific information was extracted or not.

 2. It always appears at the end of the chapter of the whole report. When the term is used interchangeable; which is very common in abridged reports, then reference appear at the end of the report. In most such cases, there is no end of chapter or section references.

 3. Bibliography is arranged in alphabetical order A-Z, especially in the APA reference style. Reference (chapter references) is arranged in the order in which they are in the report.

 4. While references (when used at the end of chapter or as footnotes) may contain the pages, bibliography does not carry the page numbers.

The most important difference in research report as it relates to reference is in the method of citation, or referencing.
